ESPN insider Adam Schefter is surprised the Pittsburgh Steelers have been fine with waiting on quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the stalwart organizations in the NFL, which is why ESPN insider Adam Schefter is surprised they’ve been willing to let free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers have control over their offseason.
“[The Q&A session] told me that it certainly seems like he’s coming back to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who by the way, continue to just wait and wait and wait,” Schefter said on ESPN radio. “It’s amazing that a proud organization would be at the mercy of a player like this and just waiting for an answer from him.”
The Steelers have done their best to put some pressure on Rodgers to make a decision. President Art Rooney II said at the NFL owners meetings in March that the team will “not wait forever” for Rodgers and he reiterated last week that his stance hasn’t changed.
However, Pittsburgh’s only other options would be executing a trade for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins or signing free agent quarterback Carson Wentz.
Schefter believes if one were to happen, it would be Cousins.
“I think they feel like Mason Rudolph can and would be good enough to start for the season. That’s how they feel, but I do think that they would then inquire about Kirk Cousins,” Schefter said. “I would think that they’ll explore a trade for Kirk Cousins if Aaron Rodgers decides not to play, which by the way, I think everybody thinks he will decide to play, and in Pittsburgh.”
Only time will tell how things play out, but the Steelers have remained patient with Rodgers and there’s no reason to think that will change anytime soon.
With that said, it feels as though it’s only a matter of when, not if, Rodgers finally heads to Pittsburgh.
