Steel City Blitz
Hey Steelers Fans. Welcome to Monday.
Remember the exciting conclusion of Star Wars when Luke Skywalker is flying his X-wing fighter down the trench? Do you recall the anxiety and the tension of the moment? Even though it seemed very likely Luke would be successful there was still uncertainty. There were hiccups along the way – Perkins’ death still troubles me to this day – but ultimately he got the job done. In many ways, the period between OTAs and the beginning of Training Camp are very similar to that entire scene. The players please the facility and for several weeks they are headed down a trench of sorts. The success comes when they arrive at Camp without any issues at all during their mission. Perhaps this is over dramatic but you get the point. If you don’t, just ask the Detroit Lions. One of their better defenders, Terrion Arnold, just flew his X-wing fighter straight into the wall. These are the types of things every NFL team wants to avoid. Some will and some won’t. The Steelers have been there numerous times in past years and none of us are in any hurry to have Darth Vader chasing us down the trench into Camp.
Episode 480 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc is available! If you’re a subscriber, you can also watch our SCB Overtime which aired right after our normal show.
I’ve gotten a jump start on our Training Camp Previews for 2026. The position groups for the offense are totally done while I’m more than halfway through the defense now. I’ve tried to make these as brief and concise as I can without skipping too much information. Here is the link to all of these. Thanks for clicking!
With so many of the World Cup games being played on natural grass inside NFL stadiums that normally feature turf, there has been a serious amount of comments from NFL players. The hard truth is that if players really want this to happen then they’ll likely need to bargain for it. That means they would need to give something up. Is playing on natural grass that much of a desire? Recent surveys suggest that 92% of current players want natural grass so we will see where this goes.
My best guess is that it actually goes nowhere. With more and more teams moving towards domed or retractable roof stadiums, it seems unlikely that grass will be a reality. That good news is that Buffalo’s new stadium will feature grass so maybe that’s a start. The players will likely desire things like less time with the team in the offseason, no 18th game and perhaps a bigger share of the pie so again, I doubt things go very far.
Heat index in the triple digits for me this week. It’s better than 12 degrees though in my book… Really cool...
