Steel City Blitz
Hey Steelers Fans. Welcome to Monday.
It’s been a week since the Pittsburgh Steelers were beaten by the now eliminated Houston Texans. Tomorrow it will be a week since Mike Tomlin walked away after 19 years. Over the last six days, it’s been…. Weird. There’s an entire generation of fans who only know Mike Tomlin as the coach. Some are thrilled by his departure while others are still struggling with it. For the team, it’s business as usual. They’ve already identified nine guys to interview (some have such as Nate Scheelhaase, Chris Shula and Brian Flores have already been interviewed) and I’m expecting that number to grow. The Steelers will do their due diligence and beyond to get the “right guy.” And remember, very few people expected Bill Cowher or Mike Tomlin to be hired before they finally were so be patient and trust the process. Do I have reservations about Omar Khan and Art Rooney II getting this right? Hell yes I do, but I’m trying to remain positive.
The Steelers will reportedly interview the Vikings’ Defensive Coordinator again if they haven’t already. I have to admit, there’s something I don’t like about him being the head coach. Coordinator?? Absolutely. I really can’t put my finger on it. Maybe because I’m so geared towards an offensive guy getting the job.
I really believe that Scheelhaase would come with Shula as his OC should Shula get the job. I say this because his pro coaching experience is very limited in terms of being a head coach. This narrative that Scheelhaase would only be around a year because another team would hire him as their HC is strange to me. You’re telling me this young guy is going to come in and make an offense that doesn’t even have a QB above average? If that happens then so be it… I’m kind of surprised the Steelers haven’t talked to Klint Kubiak, the OC in Seattle. Reaching out to his brother Klay makes sense but he doesn’t even call the plays for the Niners. Therefore, I see Klay as another OC hire.
What are we doing here? Mike McCarthy is a good football coach and Super Bowl winner but he’s in his 60’s. This is not change in my opinion. I’m not saying McCarthy is the same as Tomlin by any stretch but hiring him would be a bridge to someone else and that just isn’t the way we’ve done things over the last 50 years. My hope is that they are interested in just picking his brain as a veteran coach and Western PA guy.
