SCB Steelers Hot Reads – A Number Two Failure?
Steel City Blitz Steel City Blitz

Hey Steelers Fans. Welcome to Tuesday.

The Kickoff

Where would the Pittsburgh Steelers be had they been able to add a true number two wide receiver? No one could have predicted that D.K. Metcalf would be suspended for the final two games way back in August or even November when the trade deadline was looming. Options were available but they were also limited. I’d love to believe that had Omar Khan been able to bring Jakobi Meyers in, he would be having the success that James had since joining the Jaguars. Khan, Mike Tomlin and company believed that all of the prices demanded for wideout talent was too much. Or they also believed that what they had was enough. Ultimately, we don’t know if they’ll be proven right or not. One could say a loss Sunday night would validate their lack of action while another could say it really wouldn’t matter if they get into the postseason and lose in round one. This will be a question that haunts the 2025 Steelers regardless of what happens.

Tomlin Tuesday

Coach Tomlin will speak to the press today. I don’t expect to hear much about Sunday’s loss. His focus will largely be on the Ravens and updating us on injuries. As for T.J. Watt I believe Tomlin will remain vague but I do not believe he will play on Sunday.

Muth

Early in the season when it became clear the Steelers were using Pat Freiermuth less and less, I could understand it to a point. Darnell Washington was emerging as a receiver while also being the best blocking tight end. Jonnu Smith, who had a history with Arthur Smith, was clearly favored given his ability to catch and run. The problem as I’ve seen it is that Freiermuth is a good receiver and Smith’s (Arthur) inability or unwillingness to use him in the middle of the field has been a massive mistake in my opinion. When Washington exited early on Sunday, it seemed a perfect opportunity for Muth to be utilized. Instead, he really wasn’t used until the final drive. This will likely be one of the real head scratchers heading into the offseason.

Steelers History

Today in Steelers History, Gordon takes us back to a big night for Big Ben! It was early in the head coaching tenure of Mike Tomlin and the team was looking for some revenge against a Ravens’ team that had beaten them twice the year before.
