Since entering the NFL in 2022, defensive back Sauce Gardner has been a part of a New York Jets team that has gone 19-36. After the team’s 27-21 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Monday night, dropping the Jets to 0-4, Gardner complained that New York’s poor record has something to do with how the referees officiate their games.
“I’m personally frustrated because I feel like me personally, us not winning, like, because I watch football and I just feel like, and I don’t know if this is wrong to say, but I think I get called for more stuff just based off of us not winning,” Gardner told the media after Monday’s game.
“I watch these winning programs and there be some egregious things that don’t get called, like, they let the players play… I just feel like, us not winning, it’s just what goes on. We don’t win and I feel like don’t get the calls that we should get and we get calls we probably shouldn’t get called for. So obviously, that’s not the only reason why I want to win. I want to win because I don’t like losing.”
Sauce Gardner says he feels like he gets called for more penalties based on the Jets not winning:

Monday night, the New York Jets were flagged for 13 penalties while the Dolphins had just six. That might lead one to think Sauce Gardner is right to complain. However, there is one thing he failed to mention in his complaint is that Miami, just like the Jets, entered Monday night’s game with 0-3 record – plus they haven’t won a playoff game since the year 2000. Not exactly what one would call a “winning program.”
Also, so far during the 2025 NFL season, the New York Jets have been called for 32 penalties and their opponents – the Steelers, Bills, Buccaneers, and Dolphins – have been called for 30 penalties. So, no, to answer the question, Sauce Gardner isn’t right.
“Finally. Someone with the stones to say it,” one Jets fan responded on X. “Pay the fine, but don’t sit quietly while the NFL screws them over and over.”
“Sauce spitting facts. This league is a joke,” another fan commented.
“It’s egregious every single year,” read another comment. “NFL has to be investigated. The refs have to be investigated. Can’t take it seriously.”
“Stop holding people! Start tackling! Get turnovers! Stop getting beat!” one exasperated Jets fan replied.
“THEN CLEAN UP YOUR TECHNIQUE!!!!!!!! JFC get stronger!!!” another wrote.
