New York Jets Pro Bowl cornerback Sauce Gardner is full of praise for the team’s new starting quarterback Justin Fields.

Speaking to Pat McAfee on his radio show earlier this week, Sauce Gardner — entering his first season under new head coach Aaron Glenn — indicated that he’s liked what he’s seen from Justin Fields so far.

Fields was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft and spent the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers before joining the Jets this year.

Last season with the Steelers, Fields started in 6 games and went 4-2 while completing 65.8% of his passes for 1,106 yards, 5 touchdowns and 1 interception, in addition to carrying the ball 62 times for 289 yards and 5 touchdowns.

“There’s only a certain amount of quarterbacks that can make [certain throws]. I’m talking about throws on, like, Aaron [Rodgers’] type of level,” Gardner said on The Pat McAfee Show.

“When it comes to being able to squeeze those throws in there, I always thought Aaron was the best when it came to that. And it’s like Justin had made a few throws where I’m like, ‘OK, he really been in the lab, for real.’ I could just tell.”

Gardner also added that he enjoys Fields being “younger” than Rodgers as he can relate to him easier.

“Him being younger as well, like me being able to say certain things and him being able to say certain things about each of our games — I can just tell he’s been locked in, in terms of tape, in terms of the playbook, in terms of everything,” Gardner added.

“He getting to the facility early, being one of the last people to leave. He really been dialed in, trying to make those type of throws. He made a few throws in OTAs that I’m like, ‘Yo, I did not know he was capable of making this throw.'”

Both Fields and rookie head coach Aaron Glenn have seemingly been impressing the longest-tenured Jets who spent the last few seasons with the likes of Robert Saleh and Aaron Rodgers.

Coincidentally enough, the Gardner, Fields and the rest of the New York Jets will kick off their 2025 season with a Week 1 home matchup against Fields’ former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, who now have Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback.
