Remember all of the talk about Saquon Barkley going for Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record? He’ll have to settle instead for a Super Bowl ring and the regular+postseason record:
Saquon Barkley’s first season as an Eagle, including the playoffs:
– 2,504 rushing yards (most ever in season)
– 353 receiving yards
– 20 total TD
– NFL Offensive Player of the Year
– 1st Team All Pro
– 3rd in MVP
– Super Bowl champion pic.twitter.com/0o3WyMZkID— Field Yates (@FieldYates) February 10, 2025
If you break it out, it’s 119.2 yards per game over 20 games. He carried the ball 345 times in 16 regular season games and 91 times over four postseason games. In total, it’s 5.74 yards per carry.
For a little bit of context here, the record previously belonged to Terrell Davis, who ran for 2,476 yards in 1998. Davis logged 2,008 yards over the course of 16 regular season games, then added 468 on the ground in three playoff games. So Barkley played 20 games and Davis played 19 total. The difference is that Davis ran the ball 470 times while Barkley ran it 436 times, so Saquon finishes with the better YPC number.
Denver was the #1 seed in the AFC that season, so they enjoyed first-round bye and hammered the Dolphins and Jets before dispatching the Falcons with relative ease in Super Bowl XXXIII. Very similar to what the Eagles did this year.
What’s especially impressive is that the Birds put up 40 points on the Chiefs despite Saquon having a pedestrian Super Bowl. He carried the ball 25 times for 57 yards and didn’t break off a big one, but he did lead the team with six receptions and added 40 yards through the air. He was targeted a team-high seven times and caught a key pass down the sideline that helped kill almost seven minutes of clock on the opening drive of the third quarter. He picked up the blitz really well and contributed across the board despite not having a big run.
