The Philadelphia Eagles didn’t allow Saquon Barkley to break Eric Dickerson’s regular-season record.
Notably, he understood that bigger things were at stake, so he didn’t complain when the team chose to sit him for the regular-season finale.
Nevertheless, he could still top the legendary running back.
As Eagles insider Eliot Shorr-Parks reported on X, Barkley could pass Dickerson for total rushing yards in a season (regular and postseason).
Saquon Barkley can pass Eric Dickerson this Sunday for total rushing yards in a season (regular + postseason) (The more important stat)
He needs 89 to pass Dickerson and move into 3rd:
Terrell Davis (1998): 2,476
Terrell Davis (1997): 2,331
Eric Dickerson (1984): 2,212
Adrian…— Eliot Shorr-Parks (@EliotShorrParks) January 17, 2025
Barkley sits at 2,124 yards, just shy of the 2,196 Adrian Peterson logged in 2012.
With 89 more yards, he would pass Dickerson and his 2,212 yards from the 1984 season.
He would still need north of 300 rushing yards to pass the legendary Terrell Davis, who logged 2,476 rushing yards in the 1998 campaign.
The Eagles are one of the best teams in the world.
They also have an elite offensive line and a run-heavy approach to the game, so we wouldn’t rule out Barkley topping Davis’ historical season.
Nevertheless, they don’t have an easy task in front of them.
We’ve seen how good a team the Los Angeles Rams can be, especially on defense.
Also, there will always be major injury and durability concerns with Barkley, who has been on the shelf for much of his career.
Hopefully, he can stay on the field and make a positive impact.
It’s always nice to watch history in the making, even if your team isn’t playing, so even non-Eagles fans should be able to appreciate what Barkley has been able to do this season.
