San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an encouraging injury update on superstar running back Christian McCaffrey at OTAs on Thursday.
After winning his first rushing title and Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2023, Christian McCaffrey was limited to four games last season with various injuries. The defending NFC champions struggled mightily without “Run CMC”, limping to a disappointing 6-11 finish.
But there’s promising news on McCaffrey’s health status during OTAs. Per Tracy Sandler of Fangirl Sports Network, Shanahan said that the All-Pro running back “is as healthy as can be” with training camp slowly approaching.
McCaffrey played all 48 regular-season games over his first three NFL seasons with the Carolina Panthers. Unfortunately, injuries limited him to 10 total games (three in 2020, seven in 2021) over the next two seasons.

The 49ers took a risk and made a blockbuster splash for Christian McCaffrey ahead of the 2023 trade deadline. He boosted the San Fran offense alongside rookie Brock Purdy and helped the 49ers to the 2022 NFC Championship Game, where they fell to the Philadelphia Eagles.
McCaffrey stayed healthy in 2023, finishing with a league-leading and career-high 1,459 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. His 2,023 yards from scrimmage and 21 total touchdowns led the NFL, as the 49ers reached Super Bowl 58. There, they fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime.
McCaffrey and the 49ers will aim to start the 2025 season on a high note when they visit the new-look NFC West rival Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 7. Including the postseason, San Francisco has won six of the last seven meetings against their longtime Kryptonite, including their last three meetings in Seattle.
