The San Francisco 49ers escaped Lincoln Financial Field with a big win over the Philadelphia Eagles (23-19) to advance to the divisional round of the 2025 NFL playoffs. The NFC West team, however, lost one of its leaders and best players, George Kittle.
The veteran tight end went down with an ACL injury in the second quarter. He posted one catch on two targets for six yards. Kittle’s importance goes beyond his playmaking abilities. He is one of the most important players on the roster, and replacing him won’t be easy in that department.
Nevertheless, the 49ers quickly identified the best way to replace him on the field. Jake Tonges replaced Kittle on Sunday, catching one pass for 14 yards on three targets. He is in line to start against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday.
Additionally, the 49ers promoted tight end Brayden Willis to their active roster. Willis, selected in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL draft, has participated in 23 games with the 49ers. He has been targeted three times, but has yet to make a catch.
In the wake of his injury, which included being sent a bottle of tequila to the locker room by the Niners’ owner, Kittle shared a heartfelt message to the fans.
“Football sucks sometimes. But I love it,” Kittle wrote on Instagram. “I love these guys and this team. Heartbroken but have felt so much love and support from everyone reaching out. I’ll be good. Thank you. We aren’t done yet! Also when your team owner is the first person to meet you in the locker room, you know you’re in a special place. Cheers, all my love.”
The 49ers exchanged wins with the Seahawks in the regular season. Saturday’s showdown will define the head-to-head winner, but this time, Kittle won’t be on the field.
