The San Francisco 49ers just brought in a player who knows exactly what it takes to win on the NFL’s biggest stage. And not just because he’s been there, but because he made the play that helped turn the tide of a Super Bowl.

On Wednesday, 39-year-old punter Thomas Morstead announced he’s signing with San Francisco, adding not just a reliable leg, but a legacy built on guts and game-changing moments.

“Grateful is an understatement!” he wrote on X, tagging his new team with evident excitement.

For a squad that’s come heartbreakingly close to a title in recent years, bringing in a guy who once helped seal one might be more than just a roster move. It could be the kind of emotional lift a team like this needs.

Morstead’s Big Moment, Bigger Legacy

Morstead’s name still carries weight across NFL circles, thanks mainly to one gutsy call and perfect execution in Super Bowl XLIV. As a rookie with the Saints in 2009, he kicked off the second half with a surprise onside kick that flipped momentum and set the tone for New Orleans’ 31-17 win over the Colts. It’s still one of the boldest plays in Super Bowl history.

He spent over a decade as a special-teams cornerstone for the Saints, earning Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors in 2012 with a career-best 50.1 yards per punt. Even late in his career, he’s remained sharp, leading the NFL with 99 punts and 4,831 yards for the Jets two seasons ago, both personal highs.

Now joining his fifth team since 2020, he continues to deliver. Last season in New York, he proved he still has the leg and poise teams count on in crunch time.

Fans didn’t hold back once news of the signing broke. A Jets supporter posted, “Every team you play for you leave better off than it was before. And I’m talking about your hard work dedication and the person you are. New York will miss you.”
