Less than two weeks after signing with the San Francisco 49ers, veteran running back Ameer Abdullah received the worst possible injury news.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, San Francisco placed Ameer Abdullah on the season-ending injured reserve, sidelining him for the entire 2025 season. Abdullah left Saturday’s preseason game against the Denver Broncos with a rib injury and did not return.

Additionally, the 49ers waived quarterback Tanner Mordecai and took veteran offensive lineman Andre Dillard off the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List. The former Philadelphia Eagles’ 2019 first-round pick signed with the 49ers in May, two weeks after the 2025 NFL Draft.

Ameer Abdullah’s season-ending injury is just one of several notable injuries for the 49ers. Star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is a long shot to play in Week 1 as he recovers from a season-ending ACL tear he suffered last year, and a foot injury landed veteran wideout Equanimeous St. Brown on the IR.

The 49ers’ 2024 season was derailed by injuries, with Aiyuk (seven games played), Christian McCaffrey (four games), Trent Williams (10 games), Brock Purdy (two games), Nick Bosa (three games) and Yetur Gross-Matos (11 games) all missing considerable time.

With Abdullah already ruled out for the season, expect the 49ers to add another running back to the depth chart in the coming days.

Terrible Injury Break For Ameer Abdullah & 49ers

Abdullah turned heads with a phenomenal 2015 rookie year as a member of the Detroit Lions, racking up a league-leading 1,077 kick return yards. But he has also been a reliable second or third-string running back throughout his career, recording 311 rushing yards on the Las Vegas Raiders last season.

The season-ending injury is a tough break for the 32-year-old, who could have done wonders in Kyle Shanahan’s rush-heavy offense. Now, the 49ers have to search for another running back as insurance for Christian McCaffrey.
