The New Orleans Saints are signing defensive end Garrett Nelson to the practice squad and releasing quarterback Hunter Dekkers.

Nelson was a standout outside linebacker at the University of Nebraska. Nelson was a three-year starter with the Huskers before going undrafted in 2023 and signing with the Miami Dolphins.

The Huskers standout most recently spent time with the San Antonio Brahmas of the UFL before signing with the Denver Broncos in late July. Nelson had an impressive preseason with the Broncos, leading to his spot on the Saints practice squad. Saints defensive end Chase Young is currently dealing with a groin injury, and while it isn’t being considered significant, New Orleans is adding the young edge rusher as insurance.

In a corresponding move, the Saints have released quarterback Hunter Dekkers. The rookie quarterback has spent time on and off the roster/practice squad for New Orleans. The Saints signed third-year quarterback Jake Haener to the 53-man roster earlier this week, but will likely look to bring Dekkers back when the pieces fit.
