New Orleans is once again targeting available RB’s.
New Orleans Saints minicamp officially starts today, and with the coaching staff starting to create opinions on the roster, expect the team to host many players for roster tryouts. This will be a common occurrence up until the regular season starts, but that should not take away from the importance of these tryouts. If the team starts to target different players from certain positions, that may mean the coaching staff is not high on certain groups or there are new injuries that have not been reported yet. This was recently seen with the Saints’ interest in running back Nick Chubb, and now, New Orleans is targeting running back Cam Akers, per Nick Underhill.
Focusing on Cam Akers as the player, this would be a low-risk/high-reward addition to the roster. At this point in his career, the type of contract Akers commands is near league minimum, but he still has potential. Akers has dealt with two torn Achilles injuries that have caused him to bounce around the league a bit. Injuries are a massive deal breaker with running backs, but this deal will depend on his tryout. When the Los Angeles Rams won the Super Bowl in 2022, Akers was the top running back on that roster, and although he has been unable to reach that quality again, there is still potential that it can happen.
Going away from what Akers could bring to this roster, it seems the Saints want more talent in the current running back room. As I mentioned, this could be because of an unreported injury, but it can also be because of the coaching staff’s new opinions on the roster. Just two days ago, it was revealed that the Saints were interested in signing free agent Nick Chubb, and now they are going after another running back. Clearly, New Orleans is in the running back market.
