A shocking moment of the offseason.

The New Orleans Saints have undergone numerous changes this offseason, including staff firings, player departures, and a shocking retirement from starting quarterback Derek Carr. Still, other important players remained or were brought back, which allowed for a bit of continuity needed for a young team. One of the positions where this rang true was the safety group, but today, in another shocking turn of events, Tyrann Mathieu has announced his retirement from the NFL.

Throughout his college and professional career, Tyrann Mathieu has been one of the best safeties in the game. For the Saints, this will be a massive loss to a part of the defense that the team probably felt confident about. In addition, the Justin Reid signing looks even better, and if that move were not made, this safety group would be in trouble. When focusing on the other players on the roster, third-round NFL Draft pick Jonas Sanker should have a massive role this season, and he will be tested immediately.
