Canal Street Chronicles
New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Shough was named the NFC’s Rookie of the Month for his performance during December and January.
Shough was stellar for New Orleans, recording 1,316 passing yards and five passing touchdowns while throwing just two interceptions. Shough also made an impact as a runner, adding 135 yards on the ground and another three touchdowns. Most impressively, however, Shough led the Saints to a 4-1 record through December.
The rookie quarterback is off to a great start with New Orleans. He ended his rookie campaign with a 5-4 record as a starter and has solidified himself as the team’s starter for the 2026-27 season. While being named the starter late in the season (Week 9), Shough has garnered consideration as the potential Offensive Rookie of the Year, and was even once the favorite after a strong win over first overall pick Cam Ward and the Tennessee Titans.
Shough’s odds to win Rookie of the Year took a hit after the team’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 18 despite a strong performance. Shough put together 259 passing yards and 2 total touchdowns in the loss. The second-round pick was without his star wide receiver, and the Saints’ offense trotted out just two starters from Week 18. Despite the adversity, Shough was able to keep New Orleans in the game and even made it close with a beautiful passing touchdown to Ronnie Bell in the back of the endzone.
Shough’s Rookie of the Month honors are just the start of what could be plenty to come. The 6-foot-5 signal caller was poised as the Saints’ starter and made plays that just didn’t make sense. From his immense arm talent, improving pocket presence, and ability to make plays with legs, Shough looks like he could be the real deal, and now it’s all about putting it all together.
