Kellen Moore’s offensive staff is starting to take shape.
The New Orleans Saints made two moves on the offensive coaching staff on Wednesday, retaining WR coach Keith Williams and bringing back offensive line Brendan Nugent who was with the team from 2015 until 2021. Williams was brought in at the start of the season, and had both Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed headed towards career years before they unfortunately sustained injuries. Midway through the season the Saints brought in Marquez Valdes-Scantling who proceeded to have a comeback season at the end of the year under Williams.
The move should be well received as it will keep some continuity from last season in the new coaching staff still to come.
Nugent spent last season as an assistant for the Seattle Seahawks and coincidentally will be replacing Saints offensive line coach John Benton who was hired by the Seahawks. Nugent was with the team during all four playoff runs to end the Drew Brees era. During that time, the Saints sent four different offensive linemen to the Pro Bowl and helped second round pick Erik McCoy develop into one of the best centers into the NFL right out of the gate.
His return should hopefully lead to improvement along the Saints offensive line, a position group that has struggled ever since Nugent left after the 2021 season.
