A lateral move that could hurt the Saints.
With the New Orleans Saints head coach search still in full force, the Saints have seen some recent changes to their current staff. This was expected since the end of the season, and it was understood that the Saints would allow all current staff members to look for other opportunities, no matter how much of a hit it would be to the team. Today, the Cincinnati Bengals announced that they have hired Saints linebackers coach Mike Hodges to be their next linebackers coach.
This is an expected move with a whole new staff coming in, but this is a significant hit to the defense. The linebacker group felt like the one positive from last season and has been a vital aspect of this defense. Yes, last year was not great for the whole team, but Demario Davis and Pete Werner still had great performances, and honesty was the only reason the Saints’ run defense was not dead last in the league.
Once again, the Saints are allowing the next HC they hire to have full autonomy over the staff, so this move is expected, but this is a real loss for the New Orleans Saints.
