Kellen Moore, the Saints’ new head coach, was Brandon Staley’s offensive coordinator during the 2023 season.

After numerous reports declaring him the favorite for the job, former Chargers head coach and 49ers defensive assistant Brandon Staley is being named the new defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints under Kellen Moore.

During the 2023 season, Moore was the Chargers offensive coordinator under Staley in his lone season with Los Angeles.

During Staley’s tenure as head coach of the Chargers, his defenses never ranked higher than 20th in either points allowed per game or total yards allowed. The 2022 season was the best under Staley, but the defense ranked 21st and 20th in scoring and total defense, respectively. The year Moore was with the Chargers, they ranked 24th and 28th in those categories.

Unfortunately, Moore’s offense was just below average in the NFL during that season, as well. However, some of that had to do with Justin Herbert missing the final four games with a hand injury. They ended the 2023 season ranked 21st in points per game and 18th in total offense.
