Saints have their first contract extension of the season
Canal Street Chronicles Canal Street Chronicles

The offseason is underway, and the New Orleans Saints are not wasting time. Since the end of the season, some small moves were made, such as some reserve/future signings, but that’s all. Well, today, that changed. The Saints officially announced that they have signed SAF Julian Blackmon to a 1-year contract extension.

Although this may still look like a minor move, it’s quite the opposite. In the small sample size, Blackmon was healthy, he played very well, and the idea that rookie Jonas Sanker could play over him was inconceivable. Obviously, as I mentioned, that did not last long, only playing the first game of the season, but he looked like the best Saints DB on the field. Is that sustainable? Doubtfully. But now, Blackmon’s role with the Saints will be as depth, coming in throughout games.

With Blackmon coming back for one more year, this is a win-win situation for both sides. For New Orleans, the safety room is now complete. A group of Justin Reid, Sanker, and Blackmon is extremely good. Looking at this from Blackmon’s perspective, the veteran can now try to make an impact throughout the season, build up his value again, and get a bigger contract in 2027.
