A needed move in a crowded QB room.
With the New Orleans Saints selecting all nine of their picks in the NFL Draft and attacking the UDFA market immediately, the roster is almost at the maximum number of players. Roster cuts are expected over the next few weeks and yesterday, the first occurred. The Saints have released veteran QB Ben DiNucci, an announce he made via social media.
By drafting QB Tyler Shough in the second round, the Saints had a bit of a crowded QB room. Going into the season, with 53-man roster cuts looming, the Saints will need to reduce their QB roster to three players. Derek Carr will not count towards it, as he is expected to be put on IR. This now leaves Shough, Rattler, Haener, and Hunter Dekkers (from rookie camp tryouts) as the four players on the roster. Shough and Rattler should be locks to make the 53-man roster, but it is unlikely that Haener and Dekkers will stay. The Saints may look to add another veteran QB to mentor Shough and Rattler throughout the season while Carr is on IR, so whoever that player is will probably take Haener’s spot on the final roster.
