On Wednesday, the New Orleans Saints first injury report for Week 1 of the NFL Season was released, and a new name, that being edge rusher Chase Young, was added to the list. This was a minor calf injury that was expected to be day-to-day, but there was still doubt he could play for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. There was still a chance the Saints and Young could make it happen, but today, those odds got much worse. Chase Young was held out of Thursday’s practice.

Chase Young’s absence from Sunday’s game could be catastrophic for this defense. After re-signing with the Saints this offseason, Young is the premier pass rusher on the defense, and without him, it can get worrisome fast. The Saints also need this pass rush to be good, so the pressure is taken off the DBs, who are a younger/inexperienced group. In addition, containing Cardinals QB Kyler Murray is going to be a massive focus going into this matchup.
