New Orleans Saints veteran DT Khalen Saunders voiced his opinion on the team giving 2022 first-round NFL Draft pick Trevor Penning a fresh start by moving him from offensive tackle to guard—and it could be just what both parties needed.
Saunders on Penning’s move to guard:
“I think that is one of the best moves we could have made honestly… He’s very strong… I think being on the inside compliments his skillset and power and will show a lot more of his strengths.”
Saints head coach Kellen Moore described Trevor Penning’s skillset as “perfect” to play guard—and it’s hard to disagree with that, knowing how tenacious Penning is as a run blocker.
This aligns with what Penning has expressed throughout the offseason—that he feels his skillset is better suited for the interior:
“I think it’s more up my alley, stuff that I do better.”
Penning has looked good so far in training camp since moving to guard. In one-on-ones, he lost one and won a few—and he said he feels 100% more confident heading into his fourth NFL season.
It would be an ideal time for Penning to put it all together, given he just had his fifth-year option declined earlier this offseason. So what do you think—could this be exactly what Trevor Penning needed to turn his career around?
