Insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports the Pittsburgh Steelers still have no idea if Aaron Rodgers is going to sign with them.
Another day has come and gone, and the Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting for free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers to make a decision on if he wants to play for them in 2025. NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic thinks that wait could continue a bit longer, too.
Russini revealed she spoke with a source in the Steelers organization on Wednesday and the status of Rodgers’ decision is still up in the air.
“I can tell you, I spoke to Pittsburgh this morning,” Russini said on Fox Sports’ “The Herd with Colin Cowherd.” “No updates right now. At this point, as we’re a week out from the draft, they still have no idea whether or not Aaron Rodgers is gonna sign with them.”
It’s not the news Pittsburgh fans were hoping to hear with just eight days until the 2025 NFL Draft, but the team hasn’t given Rodgers an official timeframe to make a decision.
Many believe the 2025 NFL Draft is the unspoken deadline, but that is just speculation. If Rodgers were to not sign before the draft on April 24, the Steelers would almost be forced to address quarterback earlier on than if he were to sign with just Mason Rudolph and Skyler Thompson under contract for 2025.
Russini wouldn’t be surprised if that’s exactly what happens.
“(The Steelers) still want him, but I just think Aaron knows he’s got the leverage in the situation here,” Russini said. “And he may just sit this thing out and wait. And what if there’s another team?”
If that’s true, the Steelers could make the decision for him by selecting a quarterback in the first round, maybe even with a trade up.
However, Pittsburgh has remained confident it will eventually land Rodgers.
“We keep hearing that he’s, I guess, headed in our direction. That seems to be all signs are positive so far,” president Art Rooney II said. “We keep getting positive sort-of signals about it. I’d say we feel pretty good about it.”
If Rodgers doesn’t sign before the draft and the Steelers don’t go quarterback early, they better hope they’re right in their thinking.
