Russell Wilson’s time as the New York Giants’ starting quarterback might have run its course after just one week. The former Pittsburgh Steelers passer could find himself holding a clipboard for rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart next week against the Dallas Cowboys.
“We’re going to get home and look at our game,” Giants head coach Brian Daboll said after his team’s 21-6 loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday.
Wilson went 17 of 37 for 168 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions during the loss. Facing pressure, he hit the mark on just 2 of 12 tries for 26 yards. He was sacked twice in such situations.
“We’re talking about after every game,” Daboll said. “I’ve got confidence in Russ. … We’ll go back, evaluate the tape. This game isn’t on Russell Wilson. It’s not on Russell Wilson. Let me make that clear. I have confidence in Russ. We have to do a better job all the way around.”
Wilson, a 14th-year veteran, played 11 games for the Steelers a season ago. He passed for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and 5 interceptions before signing with the Giants during the offseason.
The Giants tripped up twice in the red zone, which Wilson credited some of the team’s failures to.
“That was a physical game,” Wilson said. “I thought we left it all on the field. We gave it our all physically. You stand tall in the midst of that game. Battling through it and trying to find a way to win. Like I said, they stopped us in the red zone. I think that was the name of this game.
“We had, I think, eight or nine possessions; two of them were down in the red zone. We didn’t capitalize on those, so that’s what we got to do.
