Russell Wilson Shuts Down Rumors Claiming Poor Relationship With Arthur Smith

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson says the rumors claiming he has a poor relationship with Arthur Smith are not true.

Rumors recently surfaced claiming that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson did not get long with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith during the 2024 season. Wilson did his best to shut those down in an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday.

“Yeah, I like Arthur,” Wilson said on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “Anytime you lose a game or two, people always try to tear things down. I think Arthur’s a great coach. Obviously, he’s been a head coach and we love trying to find ways to compete every day and just get better. He’s a great coach.”

McAfee was clearly referencing what The Pat McAfee Show’s Steelers correspondent Mark Kaboly reported about a week ago.

“Still, despite Wilson and Smith spending countless hours together after the typical workday watching film and publicly joking about it, a team source recently said that Wilson and Smith did not have a very good working relationship but fought through their differences as best they could,” Kaboly wrote.

Either Wilson and Smith’s “poor relationship” was blown out of proportion or Wilson is simply trying to put out the fire while hoping to re-sign with the Steelers this offseason.

If that’s the case, it seems to be working as Wilson also revealed that he and the Steelers have begun having contract talks.

That doesn’t mean a deal will be reached since there have also been reports that the Steelers want to bring back fellow quarterback Justin Fields. However, the Steelers wouldn’t entertain the idea of potentially running it back with Wilson without some belief he can lead them to better results in 2025.

Wilson and Smith’s relationship will be under a microscope next season if the Steelers decide to go that route, but according to Wilson, there’s nothing to worry about as long as they’re winning.
