Rumor: Tanner Engstrand and Steve Wilks in the mix for Jets coordinator jobs

Are the Jets closing in on coordinators?

The Jets have hired their head coach and general manager but are still in the market for an offensive coordinator. Aaron Glenn might turn to a familiar face according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.

For what it is worth, Josina Anderson has been the MVP of breaking Jets stories over the last two weeks. She was the first reporter to identify both that the Jets were hiring Aaron Glenn as head coach and Darren Mougey as general manager.

Engstrad has been Detroit’s passing game coordinator the last three seasons. He previously served the Lions in lower level positions. He was just passed over for the Lions’ vacant offensive coordinator job for former Jets offensive coordinator John Morton, perhaps opening the door for the Jets to poach him. It’s difficult to say how much he had to do with Detroit’s offensive success. Cue the old saying about victory having a thousand fathers. The Lions had the league’s most explosive offense, and Jared Goff’s play took a major jump with Engstrand as the passing game coordinator. How much of that was him vs. Ben Johnson vs. the talent? There are no definitive answers. I would say that on paper at least Engstrand would seem to be a logical hire.

Wilks has a longer track record, and I have to say I think he would be an excellent hire. He is a year removed from coordinating the number three scoring defense in San Francisco. Wilks also has a pair of stints as a head coach in the NFL. Even though those stints were unsuccessful, I see value in a first time head coach having at least one former head coach on his staff to provide guidance about potential pitfalls.
