The Ravens completed a major trade on Tuesday, sending fifth-year outside linebacker Odafe Oweh to the Chargers in exchange for veteran safety Alohi Gilman. Here are the instant reactions from Baltimore Beatdown’s staff:
There’s no way around it: Odafe Oweh has been a disappointment to start the 2025 season. Expectations were high after he added weight this offseason entering a contract year, but Oweh has regressed from his past performance. His impact has been non-existent, and his playtime has ticked down as a result. It is not shocking that the Ravens would move on, but it is a little surprising this early in the season.
The reported return makes a lot more sense. Alohi Gilman is a solid safety who has started all five of the Chargers’ games this season. He would allow the Ravens to play more three-safety packages, which will enable Kyle Hamilton to return to a more versatile role.
This does not seem like a seller’s move, either. Keeping Oweh in the hopes he could re-raise his compensatory pick value or trading him for pure draft capital would be selling; adding a veteran safety on an expiring contract is not. If anything, this is a major bet on Mike Green and Tavius Robinson to replace Oweh’s snaps and have a bigger impact. It could also signal that Adisa Isaac is nearing a return. – Nikhil Mehta
I couldn’t tell you if this is the start of the firesale for a quitting Ravens team looking to retool for 2026 or the Ravens trying figure out their best roster for right now. Rookie Mike Green hasn’t been fantastic this year, but quickly overtook Oweh in snaps following Kyle Van Noy’s injury. Oweh himself hasn’t been good either but has arguably been the best pass rusher after Nnamdi Madubuike’s injury. Oweh has the highest pass rush win rate on the team but has yet to reach the quarterback this year and is playing less than 50% of snaps most games.
We’ll have to wait and see how quickly anymore trades follow, but this could be the start of a reshaping of this roster for 2026. – Zach Canter
I never would have believed you if you had told me before the season that the Ravens would be sellers just five weeks in, but that’s the situation this team is unfortunately in. I think most people expected Oweh to be gone after this season anyway, just in far different circumstances where he priced himself out of Baltimore.
Despite being a solid player and reaching double-digit sacks last year, Oweh has never quite lived up to his first-round status. He has been far too inconsistent over the years and would often disappear in big moments where the defense absolutely needed someone up front to make a play. Even still, this makes an already nonexistent pass rush even worse for the Ravens. Mike Green should continue to play a ton of snaps and hopefully begin to flash the talent that...
