All three Pittsburgh Steelers coordinators are expected to return for the 2025 season, president Art Rooney II said on Monday.
Rooney, speaking during a 1 on 1 interview with team play-by-play broadcaster Rob King, said that he expects the team’s coordinators to return for 2025.
“The coaching staff, I think most of it will stay in place,” Rooney said. “Our coordinators, I think, will stay in place. … I look forward to having Arthur Smith for a second year and having him have more of an opportunity to kind of really put his system in place. So there’s work to be done. And for the most part, I think we have the right people and the right jobs to do it.”
Smith will be entering his second season with the Steelers. His first year as offensive coordinator saw the Steelers improve from 28th to 16th in scoring and 25th to 23rd in yards. He earned head coach interviews with the New York Jets and Chicago Bears, but failed to land either of those jobs and will now instead return to Pittsburgh.
Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin will be entering his third season as defensive coordinator and fifth with the club. He spent his first two seasons with the Steelers as senior defensive assistant before taking over as defensive coordinator in 2022.
The Pittsburgh defense took a step back in 2024, falling from sixth to eighth in scoring despite an increased investment in scoring that included linebacker Patrick Queen, cornerback Donte Jackson, safety DeShon Elliott, cornerback Cam Sutton and linebacker Payton Wilson.
Danny Smith has been a Steelers stalwart for 14 years now, and the 71-year-old seems set to return for his 15th season in 2025. The Steelers’ special teams units boasted outstanding kicking from Chris Boswell in 2024, with a makeshift punting situation doing better than expected after an injury to Cameron Johnston, and the club blocking a kick in three consecutive games in the middle of the season.
Rooney did say earlier on Monday that he expects some changes to the coaching staff, but none have been revealed so far.
