Rooney: Adding No. 2 Wide Receiver High on Steelers’ Offseason To-Do List

Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II says adding a No. 2 wide receiver is high on the team’s offseason to-do list.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have tried and failed several times to land on legitimate No. 2 wide receiver opposite George Pickens. Team president Art Rooney II says that better not happen again this offseason.

Rooney revealed that adding to the wide receiver room will be a priority for the Steelers in 2025.

“I think we need to add to that room,” Rooney told Jenna Harner of WPXI. “And we did try to add let’s say a No. 2 receiver to the room last year and didn’t quite get what we wanted. So that’s going to be on the list this year, for sure.”

How much more does Art Rooney II feel the Steelers need to do to address the WR position– both from a talent and a maturity standpoint?

If that’s true, the Steelers need to be willing to put their money where their mouths are. Pittsburgh was far too patient last offseason while hoping one of the league’s top playmakers would come available.

None ever did, which forced the Steelers to ultimately settle with trading for veteran wide receiver Mike Williams at the trade deadline.

It’s safe to say that didn’t work out as Williams recorded just nine catches for 132 yards and one touchdown in nine games with the black and gold.

Williams wasn’t the only disappointing wide receiver in 2024, though. In fact, no wide receiver outside of Pickens eclipsed 550 receiving yards. Tight end Pat Freiermuth was second on the team with 653 yards on 65 catches.

That’s why adding to the room should be high on the Steelers’ to-do list this offseason, even if the team plans on keeping Pickens, who has had his fair share of on- and off-the-field problems.

Keeping Pickens seems to be the plan as of now, given the state of the Steelers wide receiver room.

“Well, I think George Pickens is a very talented guy and has not reached his full potential,” Rooney said. “So that’s something we’d like to work on and see George really be able to reach his full potential.”

However, if the Pittsburgh is able to land its desired playmaker in the coming months, it could be so long for the problematic 23-year-old.
