Roman Wilson is ready to turn the page on a rookie season in which he played in just one game. The Pittsburgh Steelers are counting on the second-year receiver to step up during his next chapter.

“I don’t want to think too much about last year, but I definitely learned a lot and it definitely helped shape who I am this upcoming season,” Wilson said after the Steelers’ OTA practice on Tuesday morning.

Pittsburgh selected Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft before injuries hindered him for most of last season. He played just five snaps of in-game action and didn’t register any catches.

Steelers general manager Omar Khan traded for DK Metcalf earlier this offseason, then surprisingly shipped off George Pickens, who had a season left on his rookie deal but was a question mark past that. Beside Calvin Austin III and veteran free agent addition Robert Woods, Wilson is in the mix of guys striving to grab the spot opposite Metcalf.

Roman Wilson isn’t paying it much mind, he said.

“Of course, everyone wants to compete, but the only thing I’m really focused on is getting better every single day and just being ready when my name is called,” Wilson said.

Throughout this offseason, as he aims to perform in the way the Steelers hoped when they drafted him, Wilson said he has been taking better care of his body. He’s also worked on his craft at various gyms and even local parks.

“Definitely just route indicators, my body level, my hip level, bursting out the breaks and working on my blocking technique,” Wilson said.

Wilson’s expectations for his first full healthy season don’t include specific figures, but rather incremental successes.

“Really, my goal for the season (is to) get better every single day, treat every day like it’s game day, every practice like it’s game day,” Wilson said. “Come prepared with questions to ask coaches after practice. Just be mentally, physically locked in every single day and just give it my all.”
