NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has offered an update on the league employee who was critically wounded in Monday’s mass shooting in New York City.
The staffer, who has since been identified, was one of five people who got shot when Las Vegas resident and former high school football star Shane Tamura opened fire at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, but was the only one to survive the brazen attack.
According to Goodell, who spoke to NBC’s Mike Tirico on Thursday night, the young man in question remains in stable condition and is showing signs of improvement.
Craig Clementi was shot in the back during the chaos. He is recovering at a local hospital, where Goodell visited him on Wednesday. The NFL chief was happy to report that his recovery is progressing, revealing that Clementi has a young family.
“He’s stable and improving. Got to spend about an hour with him. Amazing young man,” Goodell said.
“We’re optimistic about his recovery, and I think that’s good news for all of us in the NFL, and obviously our hearts continue to be supported with their family. He has a young family,” he added.
Goodell also attended Didarul Islam’s funeral on Thursday. Islam was the police officer who was killed while trying to save others on Monday. He also had a young family, having fathered two boys with his wife, who is eight months pregnant with their third child.
The NFL commissioner saw Islam outside the building every day while walking to his office.
“It hits home,” he said. “The loss, the unnecessary, unexplainable loss.”
He was also asked about Tamura targeting the NFL headquarters in the belief that he had CTE, blaming the league for his condition, even if he never played professional football.
Goodell called it an “act of senseless violence” while promising to do all he can to protect the league’s employees.
