Steel City Blitz
There’s something I just don’t understand. I don’t understand it on a general basis and I don’t understand it on a football level for the life of me. Since the Pittsburgh Steelers lost on Sunday in embarrassing fashion to the Buffalo Bills, their eventual Hall of Fame Quarterback has twice called out teammates (receivers in particular) for not attending film sessions.
Why is this still happening and worse yet, why has it ever been tolerated in the first place? This isn’t something new in the Mike Tomlin era. In the early days, the veteran players left over from the Cowher regime were there to police themselves and the younger guys. Mike Tomlin didn’t have to handle those sorts of things as a young head coach.
Once those players retired and moved on however, that’s when the issues started. Or at the very least that’s when they became more commonly known. Bill Cowher wasn’t perfect as a coach nor was Chuck Noll as each dealt with players who were far less than “well-behaved.” They did however largely maintain a disciplined environment during their tenures. Tomlin talks about professionalism and doing things a certain way quite often but when the players don’t live up to that, where are the consequences?
While these men play a game for a living, they are paid quite handsomely. For most of us in our respective jobs and professions, there are standards we must meet. Most of us – if we don’t fulfill those obligations – are left to pay the consequences. What those are would be different for each of us but the bottom line is the majority of us would catch some Hell.
Mike Tomlin’s team is on the cusp of another season-ending losing streak – a repeat of last year. Players missing meetings doesn’t necessarily translate to such failings but they surely don’t help. Ultimately what I don’t get is why these things are allowed to keep happening. It’s one thing when an average Joe makes the comments that Aaron Rodgers has. It’s another when a guy with his resume makes them.
Unfortunately Mike Tomlin has proven time and time again holding players accountable isn’t one of his standards. And I’ll never understand that.
