Robert Griffin III got some good news. FOX chose him to serve as the color commentator for the Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints game this weekend. He’ll be in the booth with Jason Benetti during the late broadcast. This is a major step for Griffin after spending the season in FOX’s No. 2 college football booth.

Before joining FOX, Griffin worked for years at ESPN as both a studio analyst and a college football commentator. ESPN let him go last year, and he quickly made the jump to FOX. He and Benetti called college games all season, and now the network is giving them a chance to call an NFL game as the season heads into its final stretch.

Griffin said this assignment means a lot to him. New Orleans is special because his family lives there, he played his first NFL game there, and he also made his NFL broadcasting debut in the same city.

“My family is rooted in New Orleans. The first time I suited up in the NFL was in New Orleans. The first time I put on a headset as a NFL game broadcaster is in New Orleans too,” he said. “God has a way of bringing you back to your roots to remind you who you are.”

Griffin Trying For New Possibilities

Fans didn’t love the move. Griffin drew criticism again, something he has dealt with for years. Some even wanted him fired earlier this season. This time, he kept calm and stayed focused on the opportunity in front of him.

The job still means a lot. FOX usually tries different broadcast teams in December, and this gives Griffin a real chance to prove he can handle NFL games on a bigger stage. If he performs well, he could get more NFL assignments, either with FOX or possibly another network like CBS.

Griffin has said many times that he wants to grow in sports broadcasting. This role helps him move toward that goal. With the college football season slowing down before bowl games, he and Jason Benetti now have room to jump into NFL coverage over the next few weeks.

Just a few months ago, in October, Griffin went viral during a Kansas vs. Texas Tech broadcast on FOX. He and Benetti were calling the game, with Alexa Landestoy on the sideline. During one play, Griffin reacted loudly to an attempted tackle. Viewers thought he got too excited and believed he slipped in the N-word.

This weekend brings him back to New Orleans, a city that shaped his life and career. He’ll call another NFL game there, this time as one of the main voices in the booth.
