The speculation that Aaron Rodgers will land in Pittsburgh continues to churn on. Louis Riddick of ESPN said on Get Up Wednesday morning that Rodgers and the Steelers are a match made in heaven.
“They need each other,” Riddick said. “As great as [Rodgers] is, and as many great ideas he has, and he is actually a guy who has a huge football IQ, I mean we understand all of this. He needs a guy like [Mike Tomlin] to say, ‘Hey, look man, you can’t do this by yourself. You can’t be coach, GM, offensive coordinator and quarterback all at the same time. I got that part, I’ll handle that part. You just level up our offense.
“I would hope he would wanna go out with a bang. He would wanna go somewhere that really does kind of put a shine or rather just put the cherry on top of what is a Hall of Fame career, and Pittsburgh’s the kind of place you would wanna do that.”
ESPN’s Kimberly Martin thinks the Steelers are the best team for Rodgers to restore his legacy.
“I think Aaron Rodgers needs the Steelers more than the Steelers need Aaron Rodgers,” Martin said on Get Up. “If legacy is important to him, then I think the Steelers make sense.”
According to betting odds posted by sportsbettinghe.ag, the 41-year-old quarterback could very well be suiting up for the Steelers soon.
The website lists the Steelers as having even odds to add Rodgers, who went 6-12 in 18 starts with the Jets. Following Pittsburgh are San Francisco (3/1), New Orleans (5/1), Las Vegas (7/1), Seattle and Cleveland (10/1), and the New York Giants (12/1).
In 2024, the 41-year-old Rodgers played in 16 games, completing 368 of 584 passes (63.0%) for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 90.5 passer rating.
For comparison, the 36-year-old Russell Wilson has played 11 games, completing 214 of 316 passes (63.7%) for 2,482, 16 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 95.6 passer rating.
Rodgers sports the lowest career interception percentage (1.4%) in NFL history, though his pick totals in his last two full seasons are among the highest of his career.
Rodgers and Tomlin have been complimentary of one another in the past, but that was before Rodgers’ messy exit from Green Bay and several subsequent other controversies, including deception about being vaccinated for COVID-19 and skipping mandatory minicamp with the Jets this spring.
“I’m a big Mike Tomlin fan,” Rodgers said in 2021. “I have been for a long time. I like the way he speaks about his team. I like the way that he goes about his business. I like his confidence. I’ve heard nothing but good things from guys that have played there.”
