Rhamondre Stevenson on Sunday showed why he’s been such a staple of the New England Patriots’ offense for years.

The running back, who has at times over the last year-plus seemed to be falling out of favor, had one of his best games in quite some time in the Patriots’ 33-27 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Stevenson finished with 54 yards on the ground over 11 rushes, also reeling in five passes for 88 yards. He recorded the longest reception of his career, 56 yards, in the third quarter. The 27-year-old made an over-the-shoulder catch on the run from Drake Maye, racking up yards after the catch before finally getting brought down.

Although a handful of Dolphins defenders converged on Stevenson at the end, there was a brief moment when it seemed like he could break loose for a touchdown.

Part of the reason Stevenson didn’t, he admitted after the game, was he got a little tired.

“Almost (scored),” Stevenson said, via a team-provided transcript. “I got a little tired, I ain’t gonna lie. (laughter) But I think that’s a play, me, all the running backs and Drake and all the quarterbacks have been working on all offseason and just dialing that up. So I was excited to be in the game when they called it and make a play.”

Stevenson isn’t typically known as a receiving threat. If he can continue to involve himself in the passing game, an area of the game in which fellow backs Antonio Gibson and TreVeyon Henderson are already adept, it will be a boon for that unit.
