On Wednesday evening, a story published by Sam McDowell in the Kansas City Star revealed that in the early morning hours of May 4, 2024, a bullet came through the window of the Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid’s office at the team facility on the grounds of the Truman Sports Complex, embedding itself into a wall about 15 feet from where the coach was working.

But the most prominent active head coach in the NFL now works protected by bulletproof glass, sources said, a safety measure installed soon after.

Several sources have confirmed the May 2024 event to The Star. It had previously not been widely known in the 15 months after its occurrence — even among those in the building. For many Chiefs players and staff, The Star’s report will be the first they have learned of the gunfire that hit the facility.

Speaking to reporters later that day, just-drafted rookie offensive lineman Hunter Nourzad obviously had no idea that police had been called to the head coach’s office while he and his new rookie teammates slept at a Kansas City hotel.

“It’s pretty surreal,” Nourzad said of his first glimpse of the Truman Sports Complex. “I mean, you kind of try to prepare yourself as best as possible during the process — but you really have no idea where you’re going to go.

“But once the bus rolled up the road and we saw the stadium and the facility, it was really… it was really breathtaking. It’s really an incredible experience that I feel truly blessed to be able to experience.

“It was just… unbelievable.”

McDowell’s story quoted Kansas City Police Department spokesperson Capt. Jacob Becchina, saying the investigation is ongoing — and that there is “no indication” Reid (or anyone else) was being targeted. Just the same, police are taking the case seriously.

“Because the building was occupied at the time of the bullet coming through the window, the case is being investigated as an aggravated assault,” Becchina said.

Two other bullets struck the facility during the gunfire — one hitting the third floor, one floor above Reid’s office, and another an outdoor air conditioning unit, sources said.

McDowell wrote that the Chiefs declined to comment on his story, which is based on a “sparse” police report he obtained through the Missouri Sunshine Law. Citing its continuing investigation, the KCPD refused the Star’s request for additional reports about the incident.
