The Tennessee Titans announced a major shakeup Monday, firing head coach Brian Callahan after a 1-5 start. A replacement will lead them into a Week 7 encounter against the New England Patriots.

Tennessee didn’t name a new head coach when revealing the news. Later on Monday evening, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was among multiple reporters who said they’re expected to give the interim job to Mike McCoy.

McCoy was working on Callahan’s staff as a senior offensive assistant after three seasons as a quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He’s spent the entire 21st century on NFL sidelines with six different organizations, but this marks his second head coaching opportunity.

The San Diego Chargers went 27-37 under McCoy from 2013 to 2016. They snapped a three-year playoff drought and won an opening-round game in his first season, but the Chargers finished his final two seasons last in the division.

McCoy inherits a Titans squad that ranks last in total offense behind No. 1 pick Cam Ward through six weeks. They’ve scored 83 points, just one above the Cleveland Browns for the league’s bottom-ranked spot.

They’re also 26th in points allowed and have the NFL’s second-worst point differential (-78) after the Cincinnati Bengals. Sunday’s 20-10 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders marked their fourth double-digit defeat of the season.

The Titans made Callahan the season’s first head coaching casualty after Week 6.

“After extended conversations with our owner and general manager, we met with Brian Callahan this morning to tell him we are making a change at head coach,” Titans president of football operations Chad Brinker said in a statement. “These decisions are never easy, and they become more difficult when they involve people of great character. We are grateful for Brian’s investment in the Titans and Tennessee community during his tenure as head coach. We thank him and his family for being exemplary ambassadors of the Tennessee Titans.”

McCoy will lead Tennessee into Sunday’s game against former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel and the Patriots at 1 p.m. ET.
