We’ve been tracking any potential waiver wire cuts, as well as potential trade requests by wide receivers, for a reason. The San Francisco 49ers need help at the position because they are thinner than ever.
So it shouldn’t come as a surprise when The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reports that Amari Cooper, who recently signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, drew interest from the 49ers re-joining the Raiders.
The 49ers don’t entertain the idea of a player like Cooper without their wide receiver room decimated with injuries. It also could be a sign that players like Jordan Watkins, who is currently out with a high-ankle sprain, are unlikely to be ready by Week 1.
Cooper would have easily been the most experienced wideout in the room at 31. He certainly has the most experience. Cooper was a first-round pick back in 2015. He bounced around between the Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, and, most recently, the Buffalo Bills last season. Cooper had 20 receptions with Buffalo last year in eight games for 297 yards.
It would have been interesting to see the kind of deal Cooper was offered by the 49ers and whether that was the reason he didn’t sign, because the opportunities would have been there, especially early in the season.
What’s next for the 49ers? Combing through names on the waiver wire, monitoring names who might be expendable to their respective teams, and hoping their wide receivers get healthy sooner rather than later.
