The Pittsburgh Steelers have had talks with the Miami Dolphins about All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, but are not expected to land him in a trade, according to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The Steelers would have been an awkward fit for Ramsey, as they already have two starting outside cornerbacks in Joey Porter Jr. and Darius Slay. They could look to upgrade their slot cornerback position, where Ramsey has played, but he would have been an expensive option for a position the Steelers have not traditionally invested a lot in.
“I think Pittsburgh checked in,” Schefter said on Tuesday in an appearance on ESPN Radio. “If I had to guess, I would say Pittsburgh would not be the likely destination.”
The two top potential landing spots for Ramsey are the Los Angeles Rams, where he played from 2019 to 2022, and the Los Angeles Chargers, according to Schefter. Both teams have significant needs at outside cornerback, where Ramsey has spent most of his career and made it to seven Pro Bowls.
It’s unclear why the Dolphins and Ramsey both appear to be most comfortable seeking a trade. He signed a new contract with the team before the 2024 season, and that deal has been a significant impediment to finding him a new home. Ramsey is owed $21.1 million for the 2025 season — all of which is guaranteed — and then another $66.7 million in non-guaranteed salary from 2026-27.
Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill said over the weekend that he’s going to lobby to try to find a way to keep Ramsey in Miami.
In addition to Porter and Slay, the Steelers appear to be set to enter the 2025 season with Beanie Bishop as their starting slot cornerback, along with backup options Brandin Echols, James Pierre and Cory Trice.
