The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to sign wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling from their practice squad to their active roster, according to a report by Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Monday.
Valdes-Scantling, who signed with the Steelers’ practice squad on Nov. 4, made his debut with the team in last week’s win against the Baltimore Ravens. In that game, Valdes-Scantling played in 16 snaps of offense and was targeted once.
The Steelers utilized him ahead of 2024 third-round draft pick Roman Wilson in that game, pushing Wilson to the press box as a healthy scratch.
This week, the Steelers could be in a roster crunch as far as practice squad call-ups. With offensive lineman Andrus Peat, cornerback James Pierre and outside linebacker T.J. Watt all ruled out, the team cannot elevate replacements from the practice squad for even all three of those players, let alone more. Teams can only elevate two players from the practice squad per game and each player can only be elevated three times per season.
The 6-foot-4, 206-pound veteran spent the first four seasons of his career playing alongside Aaron Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers and since then won two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs. He started this season with the Seattle Seahawks, was released before the end of training camp and caught on with the San Francisco 49ers before he was waived with an injury, leading him to Pittsburgh.
The Steelers will have to make a corresponding move to add Valdes-Scantling to the 53-man roster. The deadline for moves to be made before the team’s Monday Night Football home game against the Miami Dolphins is 5 p.m.
