The Steelers’ new inside linebacker coach is a Pennsylvania native who has worked with some great linebackers in Dallas.
The Steelers have reportedly added their second new coach of 2025, with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac reporting that Pittsburgh has signed former Cowboys linebackers coach Scott McCurley to the staff as the team’s new inside linebackers coach.
McCurley interviewed for the job on Feb. 11. Here’s what we wrote about him then:
McCurley is a Pennsylvania native who played college football at Pitt, starting off as a walk-on. He started coaching with the Green Bay Packers in 2006, first with coaching administration, then as defensive quality control coach, then assistant linebackers coach, then defensive assistant in 2018. During his time in Green Bay, McCurley worked with names such as Clay Matthews and Blake Martinez.
McCurley was out of the league in 2019 but joined the Cowboys as linebackers coach in 2020. Since then, he’s worked with and developed players such as Jaylon Smith, Leighton Vander Esch, Micah Parsons, and DeMarvion Overshown.
McCurley replaces Aaron Curry on the Steelers staff. Curry left to be the New York Jets’ inside linebackers coach this offseason.
With both the inside linebacker and defensive back coach openings filled (the Steelers signed Gerald Alexander on Feb. 11), it’ll be interesting to see if any other coaching changes are on the way for the black and gold.
Earlier this week, The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo reported that the Steelers will not be moving on from oft-criticized offensive line coach Pat Meyer.
