Report: Steelers Expect T.J. Watt Extension — But It Could Be a While

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a reputation for getting major deals done on their own timeline, and that clock may be ticking on a new contract for one of the franchise’s greatest defensive players.

Appearing on ESPN’s Get Up on Friday morning, NFL insider Dan Graziano expressed optimism that the Steelers will strike a deal with T.J. Watt before the start of the 2025 season.

“Steelers get these deals done generally later in the offseason,” Graziano said. “So I would imagine T.J. Watt gets a contract extension at some time between now and the start of September.”

Watt is entering the final year of a four-year, $112 million contract signed in 2021. His absence from voluntary OTAs has stirred conversation, but history suggests this is typical timing for Pittsburgh. Watt’s previous extension was finalized on September 9, 2021, just days before that season began.

Financially, retaining Watt won’t be cheap. The top of the pass rusher market continues to climb, with deals like Myles Garrett’s $40 million per year setting the tone. Re-signing Watt would likely require the Steelers to commit to another massive multi-year deal for a player who turns 31 next season.

For now, all eyes are on Omar Khan and the Steelers front office as the calendar inches closer to September.
