A new report from a top NFL insider sheds some light on what it would cost the Buffalo Bills if they pursued a trade for disgruntled Washington Commanders star Terry McLaurin.
Last month, after not making any progress on a contract extension, two-time Pro Bowler Terry McLaurin reportedly requested a trade from the Commanders. All indications are that Washington is not interested in moving him, and nor should. However, things can always change, and they could consider listening to offers from rival teams.
The Bills are one of the early favorites to reach the Super Bowl from the AFC. However, for a franchise that has not done that since the 1990s, they need all the help they can get. That is why some have speculated that a trade for McLaurin should be considered. But what would the cost be for the talented 29-year-old?
In a new video looking at the New England Patriots‘ interest in the receiver, NFL insider Albert Breer suggested the cost of a trade would be “a pretty high price from a draft pick standpoint, and I think you probably would have to include an active player, too.”
So how might a deal look for the Bills?
For as good as the Bills were in winning 13 games last season, they lacked a game breaking receiver in 2024. Khalil Shakir and his 821 receiving yards was tops for one of the better offenses in the game. Do they need Terry McLaurin? Maybe not. But his addition would certainly make an already good offense one that can definitly carry them to the Super Bowl early next year.
Buffalo owns it’s second round pick in 2026. So they can easily meet Breer’s first requirement of a potential trade. And while giving up second round picks isn’t preferred, being a team so close to winning a championship means being more risky with premium selections. But what player active player would they send to the Commanders?
Breer suggested the Patriots would, oddly enough, add former Bills star Stefon Diggs to the deal. Would former first-round pick Dalton Kincard interest Washington as a long-term replacement for veteran Zach Ertz? Perhaps a deal including 2024 second-rounder Keon Coleman and Dawson Knox may intrigue the NFC East team. The Bills could also add another draft pick into the deal to sweeten up potential offers.
In the end, with the Commanders as much a Super Bowl contender as Buffalo they are unlikely to make a trade. However, if the unthinkable happens, the Bill should make a call about a potential trade for McLaurin.
