A new report suggests that San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is lucky to be alive after suffering some serious injuries in an apparent car wreck on July 14.
On Saturday afternoon, the 49ers revealed some surprising news to their millions of fans on social media. Shanahan was involved in a car crash that will limit his ability to work with his team at the start of training camp — which officially begins next week.
“Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries,” the statement said. “Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers… Assistant head coach Chris Foerster, along with team coordinators, will handle head coach responsibilities during this period.”
It is unclear how long Shanahan will be limited, but it will probably be quite some time because ESPN reports the 46-year-old “broke his nose, three ribs, his hand, needed more than 40 stitches in his face, and suffered a severe concussion.”
The coach’s vehicle allegedly collided with an SUV near his northern California home, according to sources familiar with the situation. He was taken by paramedics to a local hospital, where he spent much of that day before being released. The other driver in the crash reportedly left uninjured, per Palo Alto Lieutenant Nicholas Martinez.
Shanahan is entering his 10th season as head coach of the 49ers. He owns an 82-67 record in the role, and San Francisco is coming off a 12-5 result this past season.
