The NFL announced on Wednesday that the salary cap will be increasing to between $277.5 million and $281.5 million. What does this mean for the already cap flush Bears?
The NFL announced some good news on Wednesday - the salary cap is increasing again.
The 2024 season has a salary cap of $255.4 million, so the increase to at least $277.5 million means that teams will have a minimum of $23.1 million more to spend during the 2025 season.
While this news is applied equally league-wide, it should be good news for the Chicago Bears fans as the Bears cap space has jumped to at least $69 million with the potential to be as high as $73 million, giving them the 6th most league-wide. This is before players like Gerald Everett and Ryan Bates are considered as cap casualties. Adding up all of the potential cuts, and the Bears could have as much as $90 million in cap space.
With needs along the IOL and DL and lots of high-priced free agents set to be available, the Bears should not be afraid to spend. If the last few seasons is any indication, the cap is going to continue to balloon, and the best teams are going to figure out how to manipulate it. Let’s hope that Ryan Poles, Ben Johnson, and the company enter free agency more aggressively than in year’s past.
