Police have launched an investigation into the horrific golf cart accident involving NFL legend John Elway that killed his close friend and former agent, Jeff Sperbeck.
On Wednesday, Sperbeck tragically passed away at the age of 62 after suffering serious injuries in a golf cart accident on Saturday in La Quinta, California. Elway was behind the wheel when Sperbeck fell out of a cart and sustained a traumatic injury.
TMZ first reported the devastating accident. Sperbeck was taken to the Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs and placed on life support before succumbing to his injuries.
Additionally, TMZ reports that the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has opened an investigation into the fatal accident:
“The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office tells us … it’s started to probe the matter — which occurred on Saturday evening in La Quinta, Calif. — but right now, everything is “purely informational.”
We’re told investigators are in the process of gathering info…and conducting interviews with witnesses. Ultimately, cops say the goal is to determine if a criminal act occurred.”
In their initial report of the accident, TMZ reported that there was “no indication” that John Elway did anything wrong. Elway, Jeff Sperbeck, their wives and the former’s son were leaving a party following the Stagecoach music festival when the tragic accident happened.
Sperbeck is survived by his wife, Cori, and children Carly, Jackson and Sam. Our prayers are with the family and friends of Sperbeck during this difficult time.
Sperbeck became one of the NFL’s most successful player agents in the 1990s, with John Elway serving as his top client. During their partnership, Elway put the cherry on top of his Hall of Fame career by leading the Denver Broncos to consecutive Super Bowl championships in 1997 and 1998, his final two NFL seasons.
Sperbeck and Mike Sullivan launched the Sullivan & Sperbeck sports marketing firm together in 1994. Other notable clients of Sperbeck’s included Hall of Fame safety and San Francisco 49ers icon Ronnie Lott, former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter and Super Bowl-winning QBs Trent Dilfer and Jim Plunkett.
12 years ago, Elway and Sperbeck teamed up with Napa Valley winemaker Rob Mondavi Jr. to create the booming 7Cellars wine business.
