Report: Pete Carroll eyeing current Seahawks assistant for Raiders defensive coordinator

Scott has been requested for interview by the Las Vegas Raiders, as Pete Carroll looks to develop his new coaching staff.

New Las Vegas Raiders head coach Pete Carroll is in the middle of assembling his coaching staff, and one option for defensive coordinator could come from his former team.

CBS Sports insider Jonathan Jones reported on Monday that the Raiders have requested to interview Seattle Seahawks assistant Karl Scott for defensive coordinator. Scott has been on the Seahawks coaching staff since 2022 and was the only Carroll assistant (not counting strength and conditioning) retained by Mike Macdonald when he was hired as head coach.

After spending the bulk of his coaching career in the collegiate ranks, Scott spent one year with the Minnesota Vikings in 2021, but found himself out of a job after head coach Mike Zimmer was fired. Carroll hired Scott to be the Seahawks’ secondary coach and defensive passing game coordinator in 2022. Scott has overseen the development of corners Riq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon, as well as the rise of corner-turned-safety Coby Bryant.

This reported interview does not mean Scott will become the Raiders’ next defensive coordinator, but it’s widely expected that Carroll will look toward familiar faces to be his assistants. It is not surprising that the only Carroll holdover from the Macdonald era is seen as a DC option in Vegas. And if it’s not Scott, I’m sure the likes of former Seahawks DCs Gus Bradley and Kris Richard would also be seen as possible candidates.

We’ll keep tabs on this to see if the Seahawks will need a new secondary coach soon.
