Getsy isn’t filling in as the team’s quarterbacks coach
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein, the Green Bay Packers have handed out two new coaching contracts.
The first was for Packers assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia, who received an extension that will keep him around through at least the 2026 season in Green Bay. Per Silverstein, sources claimed that retirement was on the table for Bisaccia, a 64-year-old.
The second deal was for a new hire: Luke Getsy. Getsy, Matt LaFleur’s first quarterbacks coach in Green Bay, has spent the last three seasons as a play-calling coordinator for the Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders. When Getsy was fired mid-season in 2024, he was hired by the Packers in a temporary role as a defensive consultant, where he worked with the coaching staff to reverse engineer opposing offenses.
Getsy’s new role is being called “senior offensive assistant,” which is interesting considering that the Packers have a quarterbacks coach opening following the retirement of Tom Clements. This could be due to the uncertainty around offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich’s position. Stenavich has reportedly interviewed with the Seattle Seahawks for their offensive coordinator position, a job that ultimately went to Klint Kubiak, but at least seven other offensive coordinator jobs are going to be filled league-wide this offseason.
It’s possible that “senior offensive assistant” is just a placeholder until the Packers get clarity on whether or not Stenavich will be hired elsewhere to a play-calling position, which LaFleur won’t stand in the way of. It would make sense that Getsy, who was LaFleur’s first choice as his new offensive coordinator when Nathaniel Hackett left to be the head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2022, could be a candidate if the Packers’ coordinator position opens up.
On paper, Green Bay still needs a new quarterbacks coach and a defensive line coach. The Packers have reportedly interviewed three coaches for their defensive line vacancy, including Kacy Rodgers, who signed with the Detroit Lions.
