NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was announced by the White House as part of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, created by President Donald Trump this week. It’s a role that could prove crucial following the multi-billion-dollar deal between ESPN and the National Football League.

Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports reported on Saturday that President Donald Trump could have significant influence over the NFL’s sale of RedZone and other NFL Media assets to the Walt Disney Company’s ESPN. Because the scope of this multi-billion-dollar deal requires government oversight and approval, some involved parties are wondering about Trump’s potential involvement.

“What if Trump decides to stick his beak in? This is a massive deal. It will require government oversight and approval. And we all know how Trump likes to poke the NFL from time to time.”

On Friday, the NFL agreed to sell a majority stake in its top media holdings—including RedZone and NFL Network—to ESPN. As part of the agreement, the NFL is expected to receive equity in ESPN valued in the billions.

Talks between the league and ESPN have been ongoing for years but accelerated beginning in 2024. An official announcement is expected next week. RedZone and other NFL Media properties will become part of ESPN’s new direct-to-consumer service launching this fall at a cost of $29.99 per month.

Trump has already shown a willingness to involve himself in NFL-related matters. He has pushed for the Washington Commanders to revert to their former name. If the franchise will not comply, the President has threatened to block the Commanders’ $3.8 billion stadium deal in Washington, D.C.

He also has a history of clashing with both the NFL and ESPN. However, the league has seemingly made efforts to improve relations with the President this year.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell met with Trump during Super Bowl LIX and the league removed the “End Racism” messaging from the backs of its end zones. Three months later, Goodell attended the White House where Trump announced Washington, D.C., as the host city for the 2027 NFL Draft.

The NFL and its owners have known of this multi-billion-dollar ESPN deal for months and seem to be positioning themselves favorably with the President. Given the deal’s importance for both the league and Disney, it is possible Trump could ask for additional changes before giving his approval.
